Studio or gym — which suits you?
A boutique studio and a traditional gym solve different problems. Here is how to tell which one you actually need, with five London examples.

"Studio" and "gym" get used interchangeably, but they solve different problems. A gym gives you space and equipment for self-directed training. A studio gives you a coached, often small-group experience built around one discipline.
What a gym actually gives you
A gym is space, equipment, and — usually — nothing else included. Programming your own session is on you, unless you pay separately for personal training. GYM Bromley is a good example of the large-format version: 16,000 sq ft, 24-hour access, free weights, 16 squat racks, and over 35 classes a week bolted on for anyone who wants structure without paying for it separately.
What a studio actually gives you
A studio flips that: the coaching is the product, not an add-on. triyoga Camden, London's longest-running yoga destination since 2000, runs over 500 weekly classes across its studios — every one of them taught, not self-directed. Substation Brixton does the same for climbing and fitness, built around an instructed, community-first format rather than drop-in-and-figure-it-out.
If what you need is technique correction, motivation from a group or coach, or expertise in a specific discipline, a studio bakes that into the price. BlitzFitness - Pembroke Lodge, founded in 2009, runs outdoor group training sessions across South West London's green spaces — the coaching and the community are the whole point, not an extra.
The hybrid middle ground
Some places blur the line deliberately. GYM NATION at The Borough, London Bridge, combines unlimited gym access with a dedicated reformer Pilates studio, group classes, and personal training under one roof — useful if you want the flexibility of a gym membership with studio-quality coaching available when you want it.
Price tells you most of the story
A gym membership is almost always cheaper per month than a studio membership, because you're paying for space and equipment, not instruction. A studio's price includes the coach's time — that shows up directly on the invoice, but also in results if technique or motivation was ever your actual bottleneck.
Still deciding between formats? Our guide to Pilates or yoga breaks down a similar choice within the studio world. Many studios run new-customer offers that make the first few sessions considerably cheaper than ongoing membership — check the current offers page before committing to a package.
